My Philosophy

I have always thought that the best teachers should try and lose their students as soon as possible.

Let me explain:

If you can teach the student how to teach themselves then the student learns more than just a riff, a picking pattern, or an alternate tuning, they learn about themselves.

I have taught guitar and other stuff for many years. I actually don’t have millions of tricks (not even thousands or hundreds) up my sleeve to impress or share.

I just encourage everyone I’ve ever had the privilege of working with to follow their own ideas of what is success and what makes them feel good enough to keep the process going, by telling and showing them what I did to get where I am, who is really only someone who stuck at it long enough to get beyond the beginner stage.

In the many years of teaching I have always recognized the students who would probably stay with me and improve quickly and those who might feel that they are wasting their time.

Practise is not simply playing, but at home.

Practise is the word every teacher will offer to a student as the secret, however few will actually explain what that secret really means.

Practise is as different as personality. And it is in understanding your own traits and patterns that you will find the way to best practise.

I have myself struggled with Practise over the years, and whilst that struggle is ongoing, I have come up with ways to move Practise into Performance.

Stagecraft

This is a really interesting aspect of the business to me.

What is it that makes a performance memorable? Is is the first song, or the first spoken words to the audience? Is it the clothes worn or hair styles, or is it something else?

I have watched and learned from many and developed my own techniques that most time work, and when they don’t, it’s all about having the skill to find others very quickly.

Guitar Lessons

I am an instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, and school teacher who has played Celtic- and finger-style acoustic guitar professionally for over 30 years. I have plenty of experience teaching a variety of styles for people of all skill levels, including total beginners to the guitar.

Because of the pandemic, my touring has been cancelled. With that, I am very excited to get back into teaching guitar again. I am confident teaching the guitar in any style for people with all sorts of skill levels — even total beginners to the ins…

I am confident teaching the guitar in any style for people with all sorts of skill levels — even total beginners to the instrument. I also play and teach the Celtic mandolin, Irish tenor banjo, bouzouki, and the bodhrán (Irish drum).

Feel free to message, email, or call with any questions!

All the best,
Paul
